Ultrasound Examination

We use Duplex Ultrasound exams to evaluate the health of your arteries and veins. This painless, non-invasive procedure is performed in the office. Duplex Ultrasound combines two streams of sound waves, displayed on one screen, to provide a total picture of your vascular functioning. Doppler Ultrasound waves measure the speed and direction of your blood flow. Conventional ultrasound imaging shows the structure, diameter and integrity of your arteries and veins. If there are any obstructions, narrowing or abnormalities, they will be found during the ultrasound exam.

Conventional ultrasound sound waves, too high for the human ear to detect, bounce off blood vessels and are converted into two-dimensional, black and white replicas of the blood vessels called B-mode images.

Doppler Ultrasound sound waves bounce back from moving objects. Doppler Ultrasound produces two-dimensional color images which show if your blood flow is impaired by blockages or too fast indicating narrowing in the blood vessels.

Shown together on one screen these images are commonly referred to as Duplex Ultrasound. Duplex Ultrasound is used to diagnose and monitor the treatment of various vascular conditions including:

  • Varicose Veins
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Leg or Arm Artery Disease
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Aneurysms

These exams are simple, non-invasive, non-painful, done in the office without any medication and usually take no longer than 30 minutes. There is usually no discomfort during or after this procedure.
