Deep vein thrombosis, often referred to as DVT, affects as many as 600,000 people every year. Many people have symptoms but don’t realize the significant health risk…. for some, DVT is a hidden problem. DVT is simply a thrombus, or blood clot, in a deep leg vein. Because it is not on the surface, like a varicose vein, it is not necessarily visible. These clots can become dislodged and enter the bloodstream causing a pulmonary embolism which can be a fatal event. DVT is a serious public health issue. There are several awareness campaigns about DVT including one target to women called This Is Serious which offer important information.

We treat many patients with DVT at the Vascular Clinics of Northeast Georgia. There are a variety of medical and minimally invasive surgical treatments for DVT. Frequently, oral medication that thins the blood for 3-6 months and clinical follow with ultrasound is all that’s needed. In more severe cases, Dr. Lebow performs venography with clot removal using minimally invasive techniques for DVT as well as angioplasty and stenting for patients with chronic venous obstruction. DVT can be avoided by knowledge and preparation. If is especially important to discuss measures to prevent blood clots before any surgical procedures or hospitalizations.
